Is it Wellies, Wellingtons or Rainboots?

The answer to that question is…all of the above! I served a mission in Belgium and I had an English companion that referred to boots as wellies. Before that I had only ever heard them referred to as wellingtons.

As I was writing this post I was curious where the name wellington came from since the original wellies are actually made by a company called Hunter. Thanks to Wikipedia this is what I found out. It’s a bit lengthy, so if your not interested in history jump down to the darling wellies out there to buy!:

The Duke of Wellington instructed his shoemaker, Hoby of St. James’s Street, London, to modify the 18th-century Hessian boot. The resulting new boot was fabricated in soft calfskin leather, had the trim removed and was cut to fit more closely around the leg. The heels were low cut, stacked around an inch (2.5 centimetres), and the boot stopped at mid-calf. It was suitably hard-wearing for battle, yet comfortable for the evening. The boot was dubbed the Wellington and the name has stuck in British English language ever since.

Modifications

Wellington boots were at first made of leather. However in 1852 Hiram Hutchinson met Charles Goodyear, who had just invented the vulcanization process for natural rubber. While Goodyear decided to manufacture tyres, Hutchinson bought the patent to manufacture footwear and moved to France to establish À l’Aigle (“to the Eagle”) in 1853, to honour his home country. The company today is simply called “AIGLE“, “Eagle”). In a country where 95% of the population were working on fields with wooden clogs as they had been for generations, the introduction of the wholly waterproof, Wellington-type rubber boot became an instant success: farmers would be able to come back home with clean, dry feet.

Production in World War I

Production of the wellington boot was dramatically boosted with the advent of World War I and a requirement for footwear suitable for the conditions in Europe’s flooded trenches. The North British Rubber Company (now Hunter Boot Ltd) was asked by the War Office to construct a boot suitable for such conditions. The mills ran day and night to produce immense quantities of these trench boots. In total, 1,185,036 pairs were made to meet the British Army‘s demands.

This year my girls each got their first pair of wellies and I have to say it may have been the best pair of shoes I’ve bought them all year. They are easy to slide on and off and the bright colors look cute with everything. Most importantly they don’t get their feet wet!

As I was shopping this weekend I noticed lots of rainboots for everyone in the family to welcome Spring!

Scarves

While serving my mission in Belgium and France, 14 years ago, I noticed that Europeans wore scarves all the time. Not only did they wear them around town but they would wear  them at home and always when they were sick. One of my darling companions, Sinead from Ireland, taught me how to tie a scarf. I didn’t realize how much they really help keep you warm.

Scarves can be for everyone, women, men and children. Plus they can be casual, dressy, cozy for winter, and light and bright for spring. A scarf can really take an outfit up a notch. Another great thing about scarves are that you can tie them so many different ways. I also love the circular or continuous scarves that are like big necklaces.

Here are some great scarves out there right now for women, men and kids!

Made Well Or Madewell?

The answer to that question is probably both–made well and Madewell! Madewell is a clothing store that is part of the J. Crew group.

In November my sister, mom and I went to Scottsdale, Arizona. We marathon shopped and ate great food! It was so fun. With 4 kids under 9 anything other than internet shopping is a chore for me so my kids and I never stay long at the mall. I am telling you all of this because during our shopping marathon we went in Madewell for my first time. Its a charming store. I would’ve liked to buy at least 10 things right off the bat.

J.Crew introduced Madewell in 2006. It has casual woman’s clothing, shoes and accessories. They claim to be jean makers and doing it since 1937. I have yet to try them but want to.

Check Madewell out this Christmas. Presents for others and maybe one for yourself.

Swimsuits

This word gives me a bit of stress. I detest looking for swimsuits. I think most of us aren’t super comfortable parading around with little clothing on so we all would like to find one that enhances the good parts of us and does not draw attention to the not so good parts. I remember that as a teenager looking for a swimsuit was a lot of work and back then I had more good parts to my body.:) While we were in the dressing room trying on my pile of swimwear my mom once told me about her favorite swimsuit that she had purchased in college. She and some friends went to Hawaii to work for the summer and they found this company that made the swimwear just for your body. They took the measurements and you picked the fabric and they tailor-made your swimsuit. That sounds wonderful don’t you think? I think of it every time the season begins and I re-enter the dressing room with an armful of swimsuits hoping that one will fit like it was made just for me!

However, I don’t know of a company that does that and if there was one I am sure I could not afford it.:)

Here are some of this seasons swimsuits I found while shopping online:

Boots of the Season

The part of Fall that I really love is pulling out the cozy sweaters, buying a new pair of jeans and the BOOTS. I love boots! I always have. The boots that are showing up this season have lots of laces and buttons. They remind me of the movie Pollyanna with Haley Mills. Remember when she goes shopping (Pretty Woman shopping) where all the employees wait on her hand-and-foot? I still remember how they used this special tool to do up her shoe laces. I loved those boots!

This season is definitely not disappointing us boot department. Here are some of my fav’s of the season.

Galina Ankle Boots from Anthropologie

Impo Tayside Bootie from DSW

Regalia Button Boots from Anthropologie
