The Elf on the Shelf

Do you have one of these guys at your house? If not then you’ve got some shopping to do today. This is the Elf on the Shelf. Who is this mysterious little elf? Allow me to explain.

The elf arrives every year on December 1st. His mission is a simple one, he is to watch over the children in the house and make sure that they are being “good”. Every night he returns to the North Pole to let Santa know how the kids are behaving. Every morning he shows up again at your house in a different spot. The kids wake up in the morning and scour the house looking for the elf.

This little man is my best friend during the month of December. The kids eat up every aspect of this fun Christmas tradition. It’s another weapon in your parenting arsenal to get them to behave during the holiday season, and let’s be honest we need all the help we can get.

The elf comes in a packet with a book that you can read with the kids so that they know who this little elf is and what is he doing at their house.

Step two is to name your elf. Ours is named Luigi, does that give you any idea of how much we love the Mario Bros at our house? These Nintendo DS games have to be literally ripped out of our son’s hands at times, gently of course!

So where can you find this little guy? Here are a few suggestions.

Target
Barnes and Noble

Another important role that you will play is to hide the elf in a new location every night. This may seem like an easy task but I guarantee that at least one night during the month of December you will wake up in a cold-sweat-panic in the middle of the night knowing that you forgot to move the elf!

This really is such a fun tradition and one that the kids LOVE! Now go get your elf because he arrives tomorrow.
